San Rafael's Desirable "Bayside Acres"

When Marin was first sesttled by the Mexicans, there was a land grant made to Timothy Murphy of 21,000 acres. It was called Santa Margarita, San Pedro y Las Gallinas. San Pedro included what is now Bayside Acres, while Santa Margarita and Las Gallinas refer to Lucas Valley and Terra Linda/Santa Venetia respectively. This is the reason that Assessor’s Book 186, which covers Bayside Acres, is titled “por Rancho Santa Margarita, San Pedro y Las Gallinas.”

The Bayside Acres subdivision was created from ranch land by the Mount Venice Company, a Corporation of the City and County of San Francisco, which purchased the land at some point from Timothy Murphy or his successors. The original subdivision map was filed on Oct. 28, 1911. The map includes all the lots of Bayside Acres except those on the Glenwood side of Main Drive and uphill from the Main-Bayview connector (which is shown as Bayview Drive on the map). A second subdivision map was filed in 1913 to complete the subdivision.

The Association was formed when the subdivision was established and all parcel owners were required to be members, but the mandatory requirement was dropped and it became a voluntary organization in 1957. A couple of photos of early Bayside Acres can be found in the Area History section of the Pt. San Pedro Road Coalition website.
